Rumors about the west at this time
"Virginia gentlemen" lived in a very nice plantation and were highly educated.
Owned slaves and had balls and danced.
Held political parties.

Very inaccurate maps. Drew California as an island on a map. Very little knowledge on the west part of Mississippi. Books written by people who had never even saw that area.
Lewis had not experienced the high education and wealth that Jefferson and his peers had. His education had basically only included math, grammar, natural science, and Latin. Jefferson had balls, slaves, and wealth. His lifestyle included horseback riding and hunting.

People in 1803 had very little and innacurate ideas of the west frontier. They thought that the California was an island and that the Rocky Mountains were narrow and undaunting. Some had described a landmass of erupting volcanos and mountains of undissolving salt.
